I'm 13 and play for Morris Rugby Union Football Club. My current position is "A" side flanker and sometimes hooker. I definitely have the body type to play, and i weigh 130lbs. and i have stopped a 214lbs. French rugby play dead in his tracks. I play in new jersey, USA and I'm very devoted to playing.

  1. There is an old trick to stand out and get noticed. BE DIFFERENT. Bleach Blonde hair, Golden Boots, Sweatbands, wrist bands BRIGHT COLOURS.

The standard procedure was selecetion matches stand out as much as possible, game matches, blend in. If you are wearing a bright yellow wrist band and you are handling in the ruck etc, then it makes the ref's job easier BECAUSE YOU STAND OUT ;)

You also have to be really god as well though. So concentrate, and forget the selectors, just focus on playing as well as you can.

  2. Hey, I play Under 18's  Rugby Union back here in Australia, mainly as a Tighthead Prop or Blindside Flanker.

The main thing that the scouts love, is that you can do you job and then some.

I don't know how it works in the USA, but over here scouts are looking for someone who can do their required job exceptionally good, and more.

But don't get carried away, don't feel the need to put your teams chances of winning at risk just so you can be seen.

If your playing A flanker, which I assume is the same as Openside Flanker you must be able to run a fair bit.

So while on defense put in some good chases, set up in the right spot and put in a mean charge, this should atleast get them to look at you.

  4. In the USA we work through select side teams.  For example... there is a U17 or U 18 team for boys... im not really sure which structure theya re going with now becasue it has just changed.  Usually each region has a select side that is composed of a variety of players from different unions.  for example, i play for a team in the palmetto union that is in the south region.  the south has a select side try out for each age bracket.  Usually you have to be recommended or invited to try out for the select side- this is done by your coach.  From there, then you will play for your region in nationals and thats where the scouts start showing up... at nationals.  At the nationals they will make invitations for try outs for the international team.

Go to the usarugby.org site and look under the Mens U-19 tab on the left... it gives some specifics about what's needed from a coach for recommnedations... and where the scouts hang out!

I recommnend attending any developmental camps you can- they're always looking out for players there too!

    Good Luck!
