Question:

How to get "beach cottage" look with black bedroom furniture?

My husband and I are looking to buy new bedroom furniture and I really want black with a 4 poster bed (not laminate black, but maybe distressed?) and really want to make the room look "beachy." I was even thinking of an iron bed and then black dressers, night tables, etc. Is this even possible? We are painting the room a very pale blue and adding white beadboard around the lower walls. I was thinking of a white matelasse comforter, but just don't know if the black furniture will work? I'm afraid that white furniture will limit us too much in the future though. Any ideas would be great!

  1. You can get cream bedding and cushions and cream curtains. Or you can go with beige, that will remind you of the beach sand and the black should look much better with light bedding. I have seen it before and it looks good.

  2. I absolutely think it can work especially with the distressed

look you mentioned along with white bedding, pale blue

    walls with the white beadboard.

Add some pictures, frames, mirror, or other beach themed items with a black distressed finish or distress it yourself.

    Sounds awesome!!!

  3. I have black bedroom furniture - incuding bed reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I have avoided the completely funereal look, by having lightish parquet floor. I did contemplate white (I made the furniture) but decided it looks so tired so quickly that black was the better (and rather more dramatic) bet. Bed linen is ecru and other woodwork off white - I don't have wardrobes though, rather a walk in closet: Big black wardrobes might be a bit too much, and not quite 'beach'. I have had pale grey blue wall, but for a change am contemplating a sort of dusty damson colour - very much in the Edwardian style. Not quite sure what the beach look youre after is - I would have thought Karl Larrson might be more your inspiration.

  4. black will not give you that look , to have that look you need a bright cheerful colour ,if you don't want to go white, you could go into the aged look ,like a distressed Ivory , this will make the room feel like it's at the beach or a cottage , get some bright colours in the room like ocean blue, white , sea foam green, a sunny yellow , a glass vase filled with sea shells , some pictures frames with sea shells , you could paint the walls the colours that you like the best ,like the light blue to give an open air feel ,get white sheers for the window that will have the lightness and when you have a windy day the breeze will make them go  with the wind.

  5. I think a black four posted bed would look lovely. Nice white  sheers on the windows that flowed in the breeze will keep it light and airy, A robin's egg blue or aqua on the walls would look great, a soft yellow or white matelasse cover folded down and  crisp white sheets and pillow cases. I'd monogram the pillow cases.  Decorative pillows in aqua/blue, sage, soft teal and soft yellow/gold would add more color and a nice sisal rug with black binding would pull it all together. The white bead board is a great idea. You could also get a wicker chair in a natural color, black or white. I like the black color. A chair pad with a floral pattern that coordinates with the decorative pillows  would look nice. This would be simple, but elegant.

  6. My bedroom is very similar to what you are describing. I love it and anyone that's seen it is equally impressed.

It can be done. Consider black and white dramatic ocean scenes framed in black or white. While black doesn't bring to mind the ocean for most of us, remember, there are islands with black beach sands. Maybe add some reddish coral color to to the room as well in the form of bed pillows or a throw blanket. Make sure your window treatments are light and airy. That really is the key to an ocean theme, open, light and airy. Don't clutter the room with too many items, keep it simple. I personally think it will look great.

I too have an ocean themed room. I have a wrought iron bed, this one: http://www.americanironbeds.com/wesabeds...

the color is weathered blue. My dressers are cherry wood (dark) and all the wood trim in the room is white. I had thought of doing the white beadboard as well but thought it would compete too much with my bed. I have a white chennile bedspread. For a wall color I chose "Rainwashed" by Sherman Williams, you can see it here: http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yo...

just click on the color visualizer. It's an incredible oceany color. My window treatments are white venetion blinds only (my husbands pick).

I have two beautiful photographs of the ocean pounding the rocks at a place called Bass Rocks with the Light Houses of Thatcher Island in the background (a favorite place of ours). They are both framed in white and a collection of beautiful shells in a white basket on the floor and a gorgeous piece of white coral on my dresser. Also, my husband hung a white tin ceiling and a chandelier for me as well. It's a great look. Go for it.
