Question:

How to get ready for volleyball?

I'm going out for volleyball next fall but I don't know A) what position I should play and B) how to get ready for it.

A) I'm about 5'11 (give or take half an inch) and I have an okay serve but I can't jump that high.

B) Would biking be an okay/good way to get in shape for volleyball? My friend said she would help me but we really don't know what to do or how to get started. Any exercises would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Play to what your strengths are, it seem you are tall so middle or power would be a good option...but i have seen many tall setters, it just depends on what you are best at.

volleyball is not the same as other sports to prepare for because you don't need to do as much running, but running is very helpful for gettin strong lungs so you can go longer, but biking is a great way to do it as well (and a lot more fun). To help with jumping you could try a jump program, that is what i do during the off-season. I do a great program called Air Alert III...it is a "strenuous" program but it will work wonders if you stick to it, trust me. Just make sure you stretch a lot so the exercises you do can take effect and so you don't pull or hurt anything.

And it is great you have a friend to help you out because that is half the battle finding someone who wants to work out with you. It is much easier doing exercises with a friend. Try and handle a volleyball as much as you can. Set/bump back and forth with your friend, and play pepper with them as well (that is a really fun way to practice ball handling skills and it is effective).

So yea biking is a good way to get in shape, a jump program is very good for helping your vertical (I recomend Air Alert III,  www.austinhoops.org/files/Air_Alert_III.... ) and handle a volleyball as much as possible.

And Good luck with try outs!!!!

  2. Okay, well don't worry about the positions at first. When you start playing more volleyball you'll see what you're best at and you'll pick a position that uses that skill a lot. Just practice as much volleyball as you can, I'm sure you're coach next eyar can help you pick out a position. A girl as tall as you would usually be a hitter middle or outside. But you said you can't really jump high. Practice you're jumping it is good to have for any position. Do pylos. Yea biking is fine. Anything to get you in shape for the season is fine. Running a mile, sprints, and do drills with the volleyball. It is always good to get a head start and start practicing with the volleyball and start bumping, setting, and working more on your serve. hope that helped =)

  3. A: if you have to choose a position at tryouts, try outside (if you can hit) or setter (if you have good hands); if you don't have to choose a position then talk with the coach and he/she will place you where you belong

B: Here's what I normally do: running (mostly sprints), jump rope, bike, stairs, medicine ball, stability ball, weights, squats, push-ups against the wall (it's less stress on your shoulders: stand up with your feet about three feet from the wall and do a push-up) and then I always end with at least 25 good approaches/block jumps without a ball; crunches, if done right, can help, but I've found that approaches to the net do the same job as a crunch while incorporating volleyball. When it gets about a week before tryouts, tone down the workouts a little so you aren't sore and tired for actual tryouts. Volleyball is all about sprints and recovery time, so do a lot of ladders and shuffling between cones. I've found that it's easier if you find a friend and make it a competition. See who can sprint faster and who run up the stairs the fastest. Good luck at tryouts.

  4. Dont worry too much about positions because you will need to be pretty good at everything no matter what position you play and  usually the coaches will pick it for you no matter what you want. Practice setting, passing, hitting, and serving. If there are any camps you can sign up for i recommend doing them! THey help me alot. Practice serving spots on the court.  I go running everyday to get in shape and do jumping excercises like up at the net. Jump at each postition along the net and try to get as high as you can each time. I also run sprints. Plus stong abs help you hit harder. so its good to get our whole body in shape!  I do pushups and lift weights so that i can serve and hit harder. Biking would be an okay choice if you don't like to run. you could swim. Lunges are also good to stenghten legs for jumping. I also running stairs. Make sure you eat healthy and get lots of water. Dont forget to stretch and wear ankle braces if you need them. a sprained ankle can ruin all your volleyball dreams! Good Luck!

  5. A) well it depends on what your best at, are you a good setter, digger, blocker?

B.) do some practice drills, get a friend to toss the ball and hit it back, hit it against a wall, run run run!! lift weights arm strength is essentail for volleyball

    A) since ur tall then you can be blocker, you dont have to jump that high sincer already tall anyways!

b.) biking is mainly going to work out ur legs but thats good for jumping, also to improve jumping some people attach weights to there legs and jump up and down, and when they take them off they can jump higher but BE CAREFUL it might harm ur ankles

  6. u need to do suicide everyday. u will get in shape in like 2 weeks

  7. Start off doing some stretches. After you're done stretching do some volleyball drills together. Practice setting to each other, then spiking, then bumping. Also do the thing where you hold the ball in one hand then slam it with the other to your partner. Also go on runs each day.  Make sure to stay hydrated! And practice jumping.

  8. a]the coaches usually put you in a position they think suits you best.

b] run alot, and practice jumping high alot. and practice moving fast.

well you can lean against a wall and sit on a air chair

which is basically squatting, which will help alottt even though its a huge pain, and basically just run alot cause it will help.

if your an okay server, keep practicing your serves because you dont want girls to out-do you in tryouts.

  9. since your pretty tall, front row is a good place to start ;)

BIKING IS A GREAT WAY to get in shape.  my uncle used to bike daily and when he did he had a vertical of something like 36 inches.

bike often it really helps.  and since you said you had a problem with jumping it might give you that extra nudge to become a strong force at the net.

also squats with a bar and some weights would help with your jump if you do them right.

as you come down explode back up as hard as you can.  it will help with your explosiveness when you jump.

work on the simple fundamentals!!  it never hurts to practice setting to yourself, passing to yourself, or hitting a volleyball at a wall to practice spiking form.  work with your friend and just pass the ball and set the ball between the two of you.  hit to each other to practice digging a hard hit ball.

try hard!!! coaches ALWAYS notice heart.  if a coach notices your willing to work hard and are coachable,  they are more willing to take you as a player.  be OPEN TO CRITICISM and try your hardest to listen to what the coach says and fix your mistakes.
