Ok so here is the deal. I currently live in New jersey. My Moms entire family lives in tennessee. My Aunt and uncle both went to UTK. I really would like to go there but there is one big problem. The out of state cost to attend UTK is $30,646 a year and the in state cost is only $18,516. I can just afford the instate never mind the out of state. i am currently a junior in High school, but i have my heart set on UTK. I have talked to my mom and dad and they are willing to move to tennessee. I really want to graduate with my class here. would i be able to have my family that lives in tennessee open a bank account under my name, to help me establish residency. Please help me find out a way to go to the school i want. Thanks so much

  1. Opening a bank account does not make you a resident. (sorry)

You and your parents would have to live there to be a resident.  (Tennessee is one of the few states that does not have a durational component to their residency requirements.)

Also, if you can't afford the out-of-state or the in-state, you might be uprooting the whole crew for nothing.  Hope these links help.  Good luck.

  2. Sounds like you've got it figured out. ;) What wonderful, understanding parents to be willing to uproot their home for your future! Just check with UTK and make sure of their minimum length of residency to qualify. Here in NC I believe it's 6 months but I could be wrong.
