Question:

How to get rid of Locust Tree (WITH thorns!) shoots?

We recently had the area of our property next to the road cleared of all trees and shrubs -- we live in the country and some of the growth was at least 25 years old.

There were a few locust trees in the mix and try as we might, those darn shoots just keep appearing. Roundup brush killer doesn't even phase them.

We've tried bushhogging, roundup brush killer, digging -- they keep coming up. Any suggestions?

  1. This will kill them but will also be bad for the soil unless you are very sparing with it--chlorox bleach.  I had a tree in my city yard that grew too big and branches were brushing on my neighbor's window.  She got tired of telling me about it and one day the tree just died.  I think she poured bleach on it.

  2. Did you take out the stumps?  The growth might be suckers from the roots.  What are you using the cleared for...if you are cultivating it you are bringing seeds to the surface to germinate every time you till.

You can be very diligent and cut the sprouts off even with the soil and eventually the lack of chlorophyll will kill them.
