How to get rid of a blue heron?

We recently had a pond dug and place various types of fish in. However we have had a blue heron come and eat multiple fish. At first it was cool to see a blue heron so close, but now he has become more of a pest! How can we get rid of him?

  1. putt net on your fish farm

    on 2-3 feet high

  2. As a catfish farmer, I am constantly fighting the little buggers. I do have a depredation order, so I can legally shoot them, but I also have to maintain a log of "non-lethal deterrent activities" too.

Don't let them roost near the pond at night, thats a big one! Your local FWC office should be able to supply you with "bird bangers" (noise makers) that you shoot off in the evening to make them leave the roost. You can look them up on the web, or even use a screamer type firework as a low cost alternative.

If you have a small symmetrical pond, you can put rope or wire stretched around the perimeter of the pond. You'll want it about 2 feet out into the water and about 6 inches above the surface of the water (right out in the area where they feed). It will make it harder for them to negotiate a good feeding spot.

You can also run wire/mono from 6 to 8 foot high poles over the pond in a criss-cross pattern, this will make it hard for them to fly in.

We also drive around and shoot off guns to harass them every day!

  3. Friends I know bought a owl decoy, that worked for one day, but if they moved it in different locations, that worked better.  But in the end, the blue heron is looking for food.  He'll eat a few fish, but that is just his nature...he can't help himself.

You could look at it this way, the only fish that he'll eat are the stupid ones, the ones that come in to close to shore.

The only other option you have is to chase him away.  He'll give up after awhile and find someplace where he won't be bothered.

Just don't shoot him, I know a guy who did that.  His fine far outweighed the few fish he was trying to protect.

  4. A pellet rifle will work wonders. If that fails, the shotgun is a sure thing.

  5. You will have to create a netted area over your pond to keep it out.

  6. Bottle rockets

  7. Shoot it. My gosh are you gonna let a stupid bird eat the fish that you paid for??  I wouldnt worry about the game warden. Its eating the fish you bought.

  8. Hey, don't get rid of him. If he needs to eat there, let him eat there.

  10. id say you should like get a scarecrow type thing? maybe that would scare it off.

    or call animal services?

idk maybe they could re-locate the bird

or get a dogg to bark at it or sumthing.

  11. flush it, heroine should NEVER be thrown out in the trash ebcause they could trace it to you via dogs and smell

  12. give him a red herron

  13. First you get a really big GUN and blast its Freaking head off
