How to get rid of a skunk?

There is a skunk that has been hanging around the condo complex I live in. Last night a friend of mine almost got sprayed but made it through the door in time. What can we do to get rid of it without hurting it? And to make sure it doesn't come back?

Call animal control in your town.

Call Animal Control, they can set a (humane) trap and get it out to the woods.

Bait it into a live trap (you can often rent them from a hardware store).  Make sure the trap is covered and then keep it covered when you trap the animal.  Quietly and gently move the trap to a far away location away from people using a truck and let it go into some undergrowth.  I have done this successfully twice.  No real danger of getting sprayed because a skunk generally won't spray in an enclosed area.

Call your local animal control office. (Dog catchers) They will come out and set a "live trap" that has bait in it (usually a can of cat food). When the skunk goes in for the food he trips the trap and waits for the officer to come back and take it away from populated areas to be released.

Whether it comes back depends on just how far out they take it before they release it. But remember if one is there there is a habitat nearby that skunks must like, so he may not be the only one.

I would be worried if a skunk came that close to the house in the daytime. They can have rabies. Call animal control.
