Question:

How to get rid of burning plastic smell?

I inadvertently melted down a Zip Loc Twist and Loc container in my microwave last night. The box of rice requested that it was covered so instead of reaching for the paper towels I put the blue cover on the container. About 5 mins later the microwave was belching acrid smoke, i think it was actually green. Needless to say I was freaked out.

Two questions: How toxic is what ever smoke that was coming out of my microwave? I tried to limit my exposure by leaving the apartment until most of it dissipated. (a small studio).

Unfortunately, now all of my stuff reeks of burnt plastic. I bought clorox wipes for the counters and Febreeze for the air and clothes. What is the best way to remove the smell from my clothes? It is probably the worst stench I have ever experienced.

Thanks.

  1. If your clothes are washable, adding a cup of ammonia (non-sudsing type) to the washload will help remove strong odors. (I know - the ammonia is a strong odor, but it disappears in the wash.) As far as the kitchen/house goes, my brother taught me a trick for removing the odor of frying foods from the air - keep a container with about a cup of unused coffee grounds near the stove. When you are frying something, (fish, even) uncover the grounds, give them a shake, and set them near the stove. I usually leave them overnight, and it is like magic - no smell, even while I am cooking. It may help with your problem - hope so!
