Question:

How to get rid of mosquitos?

I live in Central Florida. I have a beautiful backyard but it's completely shaded by two GIANT oak trees. When my kids go outside to play, even in the middle of the day, they are getting eaten up by mosquitos. Is there a spray or something I can use to get rid of the mosquitos? I have a landscaped backyard with no standing water at all. I can't plant many of the plants that would help because there is no sun. I've trimmed the trees back as much as possible. It's frustrating. My children are two and three years old and I don't think there's a good repellent I can put on them at this age that is safe. Any ideas would be appreciated. They love to play outside and it's just such a shame that they can't.

  1. skin so soft lotion is great esp for the kids- also they do have some plants that do not need sun that much and will work well- also try this don't bug me  patches - they are 100% deet free and great for kids apply the patch 2 hours before exposure to bugs and lasts 36 hours!  I think this is the link http://www.divamarketinggroup.com or you can call713-221-1873 is all the info on the patch I have left! Hope that helps!

  2. What we do is mix lemon Joy dishsoap and Lemon scented Amonia, half and half in one of the sprayers you hook to your garden hose, and spray after each time you mow, I have a 1 yr. old and 6 yr. old, I don't like using bug spray on them either. This seems to help us, Good Luck.

  3. I would call the local city planning department and complain. Mosquitoes are not just an annoyance, they are a public health threat and carry deadly diseases such as West Nile virus. They should be looking for the source of the bugs in your neighborhood and treating them.

Meanwhile, bug zappers, citronella candles and Off! for your kids are well known control methods.

  4. I am pretty sure there is a repellent system that you can get. I would suggest looking at a home and garden store like Lowes.

In the mean time, a good repellent you can use on their skin is Avon bath oil. I work in an Avon shop (in Louisiana, so I feel your pain with the mosquitoes!) and ladies come in ALL the time to buy that stuff just for mosquitoes.

You can also try tiki torches with citronella; that keep bugs away.
