People call poison unhumane and they say just to get rid of the food source, how about your chicken coup that gets raided everynight and you have 6 chickens left out of, oh, 30? how about that, what do i do then? and its not illegal to shoot coons on your own property for those who think it is. How do i get rid of them now? with a live trap you only catch one a night, how do i get rid of them when 5 or 6 are coming a NIGHT??!!

  1. PETA is gonna hate this, but here is what I do.

    1) I have no kids or dogs running around.

    2) I un-plug it every morning or:

    3) A timer works good here.

Get a long piece of metal pipe. I use 20 foot sections of 1/2 inch galvanized.

Place 3 rubber tires, 10 feet apart.

Lay the 20 foot pipe across the tires.

Take a garden hose and soak the ground around the tires and pipe.

(You probably know where I'm headed.)

Cut off the non business end of an extension cord. Leave about 4 inches of the wire bare.

Wrap the bare wire around the pipe.

Lock up your dogs and cats. Put your kids to bed.

Plug the extension cord in, and make sure you and your friends stay clear.

If you can plug it into a three prong timer, all the better. The thing can be set to "off" at 5 a.m.

This is an extreme measure, but, I know about coons, and they can wipe you out in one night.

I use it on sweet corn and chickens.

    I got 14 last night.

This is your last resort, last ditch effort.

It's dangerous, and I do NOT recommend it for anyone who has kids, dogs, or cats.

  2. I had to give up my chickens because of a weasel.   Nasty creatures.  I gave all the girls away.  Raccoons, ,  Where would you put poison  anyway. so it wouldn't hurt the hens.

Your henhouse needs reinforcements, big time.  The coons come after eggs, but the will kill and eat hens too.  You must shut the hens up every night in a secure hen house.

  3. There are a variety of dogs that are well suited to guarding chickens.  Mostly what they will do is scare them away (or kill the stupid ones)  If you don't like the dog idea, start looking at area denial.  make the coup airtight.  Sorry about the chicken slaughter sounds like your getting overrun.
