  1. Wilson's has a product called Stump Remover.

You mix this powder with water and drill 1/2 in holes into the stump or root you want to remove. Pour the solution in and keep doing this as per instructions on the label. When it is ready, you pour kerosene into the same holes and light it. At first it will start to burn nicely and then seems that it is going out, but it is still burning. With time that root will disappear and you won't even notice it was gone.

I think Home Depot carries it, that was where I got it from several years ago. Good Luck.

  2. You need to use a stump killing chemical. Apply it directly to the exposed part of the root you just cut - slice it up a little at the edges to make certain the chemical will get in there. The root will die from the chemical and eventually resorb into the soil.

You can buy this at any home store, and Walmart also sells it. The day after a rain and at least once a week, reapply until the bottle is completely gone. I say this because five inches around is a pretty big root and you will have to be aggressive to make sure the chemical gets where it needs to go.

  3. You need to saw down the tree first. Then rip up the driveway and remove the root. Then repave.  Tree roots won't "dissolve" overnight. And, if the tree is left, more roots will do the same thing.
