How to get shine back on pewter platter?

I'm so upset. I have a beautiful platter that I received as a gift. I think it's made of pewter - possibly aluminum. It was always shiny and I've always handwashed it. Last week, it was accidentally placed in the dishwasher and now it's all watermarked, the shine is gone and it starts to get white pit marks if I don't immediately dry it. Can anyone help?
