How to get sims 2 downloads to work?!!?

HI!! i have the sims 2 and i am trying to download some custon content from sites such as http://www.modthesims2.com/download.php but what i download never shows up in the game could you please tell me step by wteo what i have to do to get them to show up in the game please include links for software i might need to download and how to uncompress the files or whatever or please include any links to websites that download directly into the game like www.thesims2.ea.com and WTF is a mesh and how do you use those?? THANKS ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!
