Register at http://www.elance.com and set up a profile for yourself.   Try to make your profile as complete as possible - that is what prospective clients will look at to determine your credibility and capability.  Then you can bid on different software projects on elance.   There are other similar freelance work sites out there, but I think elance is the best.
