  1. Good instincts. Poetry.com is a scam designed to get aspiring writers to submit their work, then pay for the book it is published in. You can spend hundreds of dollars on this scam and almost no one outside of their company ever wins the money. (True story.)

Anyway, if you really want to become a published author, the best way to get your feet wet is through small press publications. Go to your local bookstore and pick up a copy of "Poets Market." Inside are detailed listings of all the poetry publications they know about and their submission guidelines.

From there, there are two ways to proceed. I used to go through the book and look for publications that matched my interests, style, etc. A former colleague of mine used to just submit to every magazine in there one after another. Every week (it seemed like) he'd get a notice that one of his poems was being published. This is the kind of thing you have to do to stay working at a college, so I wouldn't recommend it to you starting out, but it serves as a reminder that sometimes they don't look too closely at who's submitting.

the secret everyone wants to know is, where is it easy to get into. The best option is to try small, college publications. They are usually hungry for good poetry and will often comment on rejections.

Which brings me to my next point--you will be turned down. All writers are. I used to work for one magazine that is somewhat well-known. Each month we received submissions from a few famous poets and each month we rejected them to, sometimes, print no-name writers because they were better.

Remember, just because your poem gets rejected doesn't mean it is bad, it just means you didn't find the right editor. A good editor, that likes your work, will print you repeatedly. Your rejection means one person out of 300 million said "no."

Yahoo has a good list of small presses here: http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Econom...

Also consider online publications. Because they have fewer costs, they can afford to print more poetry. They are often just as picky as paper-based publications. There is also less of a stigma attached to these publications than just a few years ago.

  2. Honey I was an editor for a major poetry journal in Canada and am also a published poet. The way to get your work published is to submit to myriad publications. You can also go the other route and self publish your work. Honey, I see potential in you but I do not see any dedication to the work of writing. Judging by the way you have constructed your question, I should say that you need to take more English courses in school because your sentence structure is atrocious to say the very least. Please do not let my comments cause you any ill feelings as I am merely attempting to enlighten you.

If you would like to publish your work you should check into purchasing a  POETS MARKET this is a guide that explains the ins and outs of Poetry markets(places to publish) ways to submit your work to individual publishers. I wish you the very best in your future poetic endeavors.

  3. Poetry.com is a "Vanity Press." They publish your poems IF you pay them.

At 16, you cannot sign a legal contract. Anything happening for you will have to be signed by your parents.

My company publishes Internet poetry. Check out our website....
