  1. Visas and permits for students

    What does a Student Visa or Permit allow?

    Having a New Zealand Student Visa or Permit allows a student from overseas to study in New Zealand for a set time at a specified institution as a full-time student.  In most cases we issue a one-year, renewable permit.

    The main purpose of a Student Visa or Permit is to allow an international student to study full-time in New Zealand.  However, in some cases we may vary the conditions of a Student Permit to allow a student:

        * to study part-time

        * a limited opportunity to work while studying if the student’s course requires them to be here for more than one year.

    Who can get a Student Visa or Permit?

    Most people can be considered for a visa or permit to study in New Zealand, provided they meet all the requirements. But, to protect the interests of New Zealanders we don’t issue visas to people involved in certain activities.

    How do I get a Student Visa or Permit?

    We have a clear application process for students to follow so they can come to New Zealand to study. They’ll have to show us they’ve paid the foreign student fees. And they’ll also need to pay a fee to apply for a Student Visa or Permit.  Go to the fees finder to see what students need to pay.ou will need a student visa if you wish to come to New Zealand to study full-time for more than 3 months. You can only get a student visa to study in a course at an education institution, which is registered and approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Student Visa applications are processed by New Zealand Immigration Service, New Delhi

    Your student visa will be issued for the length of time your course tuition fees have been paid. If you are studying a long-term course at secondary school, University or Polytechnic you will normally pay your tuition fees every year. Visa application should be lodged at least 2 months prior to the course commencement date.

    as for your family? if your finances permit it? you will have to apply for a visa for them;

    here is the New Zealand site ;

  3. swan tips - you asked why someone would bring their family - this is a perfectly normal thing to do. They are a doctoral student - they are not some 18 year old straight out of high school. Visas exist for exactly this kind of reason. I am a bit concerned about the standard of law advice you would be giving out at your law centre if you were not even aware of this.

    The following is the link regarding visas for family members.

  4. Why would you want to take your family with you when you are the one who is studying in New Zealand??? This is often why visas are turned down once people start trying to bring all of their family over with them. It really is taking advantage of the system because what ultimately happens is that people after they have completed their studies apply to reman in the country bringing their wife, three kids, mother, father, sister and brothers with them!!!!

    Source: I studied Law and worked in a Law centre.

  5. There were a few very informative Answers about how and from where you get 'get student visa' for NZ.

    However, one of my friends has been doing these types of 'consultancy' for migration to NZ and I find him traveling a lot between Dhaka, New Delhi, Auckland, Wellington and even Australia and sending students and prospective migrants to NZ and recently to Australia. I know that there are lot of stories where some painful too.

    Therefore, please do not pay any money till you check and cross-check the background of such Travel Agencies or Consultants.

    Better, if you can manage time then visit the NZ HC in India and find out all the details by yourself.

    Have a nice journey and successful studies!
