I don't want to pay the extra $23 to download something. Anyone know how I can do this easier? Also anyone have any good family tree websites, for free or at least minimum money. Thanks!

  1. rootsweb.com   very good site

  2. Even many of the pay sites offer free use of their message boards. Most of my progress was do to 6th and 9th cousins who had been working on the family lines, and contacted me directly, then sent me gedcoms (with source citations.). These trees contained about 10,000, all because of a free posted query I put on message boards.

Many old family stories, photos and tintypes have made their way fourth and back since, and it was all free.

Blindly downloading other's gedcoms, especially if unsourced, is usually unproductive, especially if they're charging $23 a pop. Making real contacts, even by joining the local genealogical society is far more useful.

Still, if you get into it, the pay services will save you a lot of money in travel and postage expense, and they have their value and earn their money.

Until then, http://www.rootsweb.com and http://www.familysearch.org are great places to start.

And don't forget any of the message or forum boards on the pay sites.

    Good luck and happy hunting.
