How to get the Ps3 to use surround sound?

Hi. I have a Sony Bravia TV, a PS3, and a Sony DVD Home Theatre System. However it doesnt look like I can use the surround sound when using the PS3 - which I was told by Sony Australia - because it is a DVD HTC rather than a Home Theatre System. I didnt understand them completely, but what I understand is that I need to buy a receiver for it, more $$$!

I am wondering if this is correct, and if I do buy a Sony receiver, are they all the same? Do the speaker plugs (which fit into the back of the dvd player) fit into the receiver, making the dvd player redundant? Also I have heard I would need (or do need) an optical cord...???

I am using HDMI from Ps3 to TV, and HDMI from DVD to TV... Maybe this is the problem?

Thanks

  1. If your HTC has an optical input, then an optical cable is the best way to go, they're pretty cheap and deliver good sound, just hook it up to your PS3 and remember to change the sound setting on your PS3 to "optical-in"

I have this set up with a DVD HTC, so they guys saying it needs to be just a HTC are talking nonesense.

  2. You need a AV receiver to get benefits from PS3 and optical cords also.Your connections are correct.
