I've just bought a boat with a Mariner 8hp 2-stroke saildrive. Its not been used since 2006. What should I do to give myself the best chance of it running well when I try to start it. I haven't done this yet, as its only just gone into the water. Someone said i should ditch the old fuel and start again, and other ideas?

  1. Since there is no way to know if it was properly stored, you should  have it checked by an experienced mechanic.  At the very minimum. Lubricate the cylinders and crankshaft before starting and discard old fuel from all tanks, drain  and/or clean old fuel from carb.  The biggest concern is rust caused by condensation on the crankshaft.  Unlike an automotive engine, this engine has roller bearings that are used to connect the piston rod.  A pitted crank will cause excess heat and bearing failure, which in tern can  throw a rod, cracking  the sidewall of the block.  If stored in a cool dry place and properly "winterized" you may have no problems, but most manufacturers recommend that a stored engine be re-serviced if stored for 2 or more years.  Also if the crab. was ran "dry" before storage, a good practice, that will insure good fuel on starting.  There are several "fogging" oils that can be used before attempting to restart the engine, however they can't fix hidden problems.  Since the replacement cost of this engine is relatively high. I'd invest in professional help, before starting.

  2. Burn a heavy mix of oil/fuel ratio for about 4-6 hours of run time.

  3. I've had small boats and engines all my life. they are normally very rugged. change the gas in the tank and give it a crank. it may "spit and sputter" if there is some old gas in the engine but usually it will begin to run fine when the new gas feeds in the engine. yes, periodically it's good to get the engine serviced but it will begin to let you know (poor performance, slow to crank) when it's time for service.
