How to get the most out of studying abroad?

The problem is I'm stuck with these Americans I came here with.. they are a great crowd, and some of them are serious cuties. But I'm here to LEARN FRENCH, and it's seriously hindering me branching out. I will SERIOUSLY regret my study abroad if my spoken French isn't dramatically better. Please give me ideas.. how can I branch out? It's difficult making friends, but along with friends, is there another way to practice my french? Should I just go into random stores and try to speak with the shopkeepers about items and such?

  1. Two ideas

      1.  Try to find some students from France who are attending the same college - try a coffee house or local bistro.  You could also try to find someone from the same classes you are taking.

      2.  Look for some other exchange students who are not from the USA - ask to universtiy if there is anyway to contact some of them.  Also, you may just want to go to a local hostel and try to meet some people who are traveling the area you are studying at.....at least you will be meeting people from other parts of the world!

    Good luck
