Indianrail.gov.in is best site to know about reservation status or PNR inquiry.

You can also dial 1330(English) OR 1335 (Hindi) and get status of your ticket.(Dial 011 before if you are dialing outside of Delhi and number seems to be working through only from BSNL and AIR TEL etc... and not from reliance &tata etc...)

You can log in to www.indianrail.gov.in for all the details,Example: Train Seat or Berth Availability,PNR Status,Station Codes,Fare Details,Schedules,Refund Rules etc.Even  you can dial 139 all over India for all the details mentioned above.

If you want to book a ticket you can go to railways booking counter or log in to www.irctc.co.in,From this website you can book Tatkal tickets also.

I always get that information through the vendor I used to book the reservation.  They have to provide that to you.
