  1. DON'T. First of all, you can't say what colour the next generation will be just by looking at the current parental generation; you'd need a whole list of their family background, and even then genetics are still hard to predict down to the specifics. (It's like trying to get a blonde baby by grabbing two blonde people-you could still end up with a brunette baby!)

More importantly, breeding bettas is a lot of work. They are very aggressive and the male would more than likely just attack the female! If you really want this colour fish, your easiest way to get it is to go to PetSmart or wherever and pick one out. Sorry! =)

  2. a green blue female

  3. NOOOOO

U cannot put a male betta with any other fish. They will attack it. Trust me.

  4. If they're from the pet store, then it's pretty much impossible to tell...their genetics are up in the air, and it's hard to assume what the fry will look like just from the parents - you need to look at their entire genetic background.

I think it would be hard with a red male...even if you got a blue or turquoise female, you'd probably end up with a bunch of multi-colors, which would be blueish with some red, or red with some blue...I think your best bet would be to buy a pair of fish off of a site like Aquabid, where you're certain a lot has gone into creating and maintaining the colors you see. That way, you're pretty much certain of what most of the babies will look like.

Do you know everything required to spawn bettas? It's a ton of work, and even the actual spawning isn't the hard part - caring for the fry is. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail me.

  5. Betta color genetics are not straightforward and are really rather complex, more so than most animals.

The colors in bettas are layered and so certain colors need to be turned off in order for other colors in lower layers to appear.  Nothing is simple as put this and this together to get this, its just doesnt work that way and fish store bettas have a complete wild card of color genetics.

Honestly, your best off getting bettas with the colors you want and breeding those as the red will more than likely throw off more reds regardless of the female or something completely out there as opposed to the colors you want

  6. You should a female that has a little red in it!

  7. I definately WOULD NOT try to mate them...males are very aggressive and he will probably eat the female. Your best bet is to go to your pet store and buy one that is the color you want. I have a betta that is the color you want. Just go to PetSmart.
