How to get to Machu Pichu?

Is there any way I can get to Machu Pichu without taking the train (from Perurail) or hiking? The train is all booked up.

I'll also be leaving from Aguas Calientes to MP. How can I get from AG to MP without the train?

Thanks!

  1. If you're already going to be in Aguas Calientes (aka Machu Picchu Pueblo) then it's no problem taking a bus to the site.  I would suggest arriving in Aguas Calientes the day before you plan to visit MP and buying a bus ticket right away.  Find the tourist office and they can sell you a bus ticket.  If you take the earliest bus (I think ours left at 5:30 am) then you'll be among the first to arrive at the site and have many opportunities to explore and take photos before the hoards of tourists arrive around 10:00 am or so.  Since you're arriving the day before, visit a market and stock up on breakfast and lunch stuff so that you can really enjoy your day.  There is one restaurant at Machu Picchu and it's super expensive and very limited in what it serves.  Also, you have to leave the site and hike down the hill to get to the restaurant (near tourist buses, etc.) so if you want to really maximize your time, definitely bring a picnic lunch.  I would also suggest wearing good hiking shoes and taking the trek up Huayna Picchu (the smaller mountain next to Machu Picchu ).  It's a hike straight up a mountain, but it's not too long.  Take it slowly and you'll enjoy breathtaking views looking down upon Machu Picchu.  IT IS SO WORTH IT!!!  Enjoy your trip!

  2. take the 3:10 to yuma, there you'll meet a man in a poncho named clint, clints packin heat so dont mess around! then slip onto the underground railroad with harriet tubman and her band of slaves and gypsies and get off at the death valley station.

walk 40 miles in the desert with a horse with no name and you should arrive at machu pichu by sundown...

or you can just fly there

  3. MP is right beside Aguas Calientes, buy a roundtrip bus ticket the day before and take the bus at the earliest. they start at 6am

  4. from Aguas Calientes to MP there are tons of buses... not trains.. take 20 min.. one could walk too..

i would ask a tour operator for help if you need to get from Cusco to Aquas Calientas..

    we used www.sunriseperu.com

we took the train and got off at mile 84 and then trekked the rest of the way with a guide.

  5. I believe there is a helicopter service to Aguas Calientes, but it is very expensive. The other possibility is to take a bus to Ollantaytambo and see if there are any open seats there. Unluckily the road from Cuzco down the sacred valley only goes as far as Ollantaytambo and not to Machu Picchu (they do this to limit the amount of people that enter the site), so its either walk, train or helicopter.
