Is there any type of public transit or something that someone could take?

SCMTD Route 91 Commuter Express  (Santa Cruz-Watsonville)

to Santa Cruz Transit Center

There are more than a half dozen routes from SC to UCSC

Yes, but it's slow and awkward.  You can get a bus from Monterey to Salinas, another one from there to Watsonville, again to downtown Santa Cruz and a 4th bus to UCSC.  Allow plenty of time.
