How to get to manchester from ormskirk by rail?

Its a messy place to get too by train.   There are only two ways, both long winded.   travel to Preston and then on to Ormskirk, or Manchester to Liverpool.   The trains from Liverpool are more frequent though.   As said a messy place to get to.
