How to get up there with the guys...?

I'm a fourteen year old girl and I want to start racing motocross. I began racing at our local club this year and think it is great, but I find it a bit of hard work, and i would like to beat some of the guys who rekon they're so good...

I'm not extremely fit or strong and a bit skinny, but i got that coz my mum and dad were a bit skinny. We live on a property 32 clicks from town, so i dont have access to the gym.

I ride my push-bike every afternoon with my dog, but I feel this isn't enough if I am to get the best out of riding motocross.

Is there anything I can do to get fitter, feel better and get up there with the guys?

  1. In mx strength is not as important as overall fitness. Do cardio training, your push bike is perfect for this, so is just plain running.

You don't need a gym or a fitness club, there are more than enough exercises that you can do at home. Every morning do 50 push ups and 50 sit ups. Find a bar or some other thing that you can get a hold of over your head and to as many pull ups as you can.

The best racers are small and skinny, RIcky Carmichael is probably not much bigger than you are. If you can, then find a used race bike and practice as much as you can. If you can't afford a bike or your parents won't buy you one. Sweet talk some of the boys at the track to loan you there bikes, come on now your a girl and you can do that.

It sounds like you are not from the US but if I could I would loan you a bike to race...

Good luck as a racer girl.

  2. most of the top racers use the bicycle to train street cycles for the most part add some mountain biking in there for some more muscle development

  3. There are loads of exercise programs and DVDs that you could try out (from the library if you are a member) or buy online which would help with all round fitness. Swimming is also an excellent way to tone up.

Remember that at your age you are still growing and your body is going through a lot of changes, so don't push yourself too hard - Stamina is as important as muscle.

If your club has young members they should also be offering some sort of training - DO AS MUCH PRACTICE AS YOU CAN! Good technique is going to make more difference than biceps like Popeye.

Other things you can do online is ask questions (tick that box girl!)  read up about riding styles, machine spec's and handling characteristics. The more you know about what your machine can do, the more confidence you will have in it and your ability to ride it to the limit.

Finally, you have to keep at it - it IS hard work! - and only experience will tell you when it's right to go beyond 100 % and take some of those calculated risks that make the difference between winning and losing!

  4. Keep going to the track everyday.

    Practice all the time.
