I live in an apartment on the second floor. last week i found a trail of ants coming from my front door, through the entry, and to the carpet. and there was a whole lot of them on the carpet. i sprayed them with "hot shot ant killer" and they seemed to die. however, now i've found them in the living room, and in the bedroom (where there are no food sources.) Im unsure of the kind of ant, but i searched the internet, and i think it might be either: pavement ants, or odorous ants, or perhaps another kind. I know that they are red with black rearends. i thought that they were fire ants at first, but their nesting habits seem to be either underneath the tile floor or underneath the carpet some how. they tend to gather on the carpet in the middle of the carpet. (i read that fireants tend to have mounds, and i highly doubt that there is a mound between me and my neighbor below me.) I vaccum about twice a week, so i keep a nice floor. I have a dog and a guinea pig, so i try and watch for their safety as far as the sprays go=- when i spray, i keep them in another area of the house for a while.I have sent a request to my apartment manager last weeek to have the apartment sprayed, however i havent had any response. my questions are: how can i get rid of them? and does anyone have an idea of what kind of ant these are? i'll try and get a picture of them or something next time i see alot of them forming. THank you for any info that anyone has. im scared to walk on my carpet :-/

  1. what works is coffee grounds out around the outside the building will prevent ants from coming in the building,

  2. try Terra traps. hardware  store or home store have them.

  3. Something else that works well on ants and other crawlies: HotShot "MaxAttrax" Roach Killing Powder. It's almost pure boric acid, sells in Lowes and other such stores for around $4/ 1-lb. container, and is pet-friendly.

  4. To stop ants seal off cracks where they are entering with putty or petroleum jelly and sprinkle red pepper. Old fashion remedy and it works.

  5. Get some Terro Liquid Ant Killer, available almost anywhere.  Those "door traps" never work - you will actually see Terro working.  Just place a few drops of it (basically nontoxic) around the corners of your apartment and it will get distributed throughout the entire colony, killing it.  You have my personal guarantee...ants (especially the kind you have) can't get enough of the stuff.
