Question:

How to give baby medicine

My 11 month old refuses to take his medication. He has tonsillitis and needs to take antibiotics (and some other stuff). I stick the syringe in his mouth, (in the cheek, like I was told), but he just flops forward and lets it all run out. The sneaky little thing will hold it in his mouth too, making me think he swallowed and the minute I let him go, out everything comes. I've tried putting it in a bit of chocolate milk too, but he doesn't like that either. Any ideas? Perhaps something I haven't tried?

Thanks moms!

  1. My step mum always used to put it in the dropper and then put it in the side of my sis's mouth, squeezed it and then blew softly at her face.  your natural reflex is to swallow.  Granted, your child will be mad as all h**l, but the meds are down and usually none is wasted.  I've had to do this a few times, but man they get pissed.

there are two products on the market to help though.  one is a small bottle that has a built in plunger that you slowly push when the child is drinking the bottle, and never tastes the meds,    or there is a pacifier that does the same thing.

  2. Try mixing it in with his food/formula. There are medicine droppers you can get that are like a soother too (if he takes one), give him a reward, maybe show him you taking your "medicine" (just use water/juice in the dropper, whatever colour it is) so he sees that it will be okay if he takes it. good luck

  3. try mixing it in something he loves to eat. like maybe his cereal. and he wont notice you are even giving it to him.

  4. i am a veterinary technician so i am used to giving dificult animals medicines. i find with my 6.5 month old daughter i give her a gentle squeeze around her mouth this helps open her mouth and then put the medicine dropper in the back of her mouth and leave it there until she swallows. i am very gentle and never rough in the process.

  5. does he eat oatmeal or applesauce or yogurt or something like that in the morning?

maybe you could try mixing it in with that?

  6. Wait till he falls asleep and then put some on the edge of his mouth.  He'll l**k it off.

Or get a syringe and when feeding him at night give him his meds.

  7. You're half way there, sticking the syringe in the cheek area... What you should do is to avoid giving it all at once... Try giving 0.5ml first, after a few secs another 0.5ml as to avoid wasting the medicine...

Giving it in small amount will make it easier for him to swallow instead of giving it all at once... Hope it works ! ! !
