  1. First, there are no boyfriend/girlfriend visa's to Canada.  You would only be able to sponsor him as your spouse, common law partner or conjugal partner.  In your current situation you would only qualify as conjugal partners.  Spouse's must be legally married and common law partners must be living together for 12 months before applying.  In conjugal relationships you must show proof of the relationship for one year and you must provide  reasons as to why you have been unable to get married or live together.  Really, it is the hardest one to do.

You, as the Canadian, must sponsor him to Canada.  You will be required to show sufficient funds, proof of citizenship or legal residence and willingness to provide support for 3-5 years once he enters Canada.

He will have to apply for PR in Canada.  He will have to provide a criminal record check and fill out the application.  He will also have to pass a medical exam.

The total time is at least one year and sometimes several years.  The total cost will be about 1800.00$

You need to go to the CIC website to get all the information and applications,  www.cic.gc.ca.  You need to go to the link that says IMMIGRATE.  Then go to the FAMILY CLASS.

You can contact me if you wish.  Email is on my profile.

    Good Luck

You will not need a lawyer if your case is straightforward.  The paperwork is time consuming but most anyone can fill it out without any problems.  The only time that I would suggest to get a lawyer is if there is a problem (ie..legal issues, immigration issues in the past, failed medical).  You really don't need one otherwise and they would usually charge you 3000.00-5000.00$ just to do the work that you can do.
