  1. Maybe not right now; if you'd asked 2 years ago I'd say get straight on the boat but the building market is a little thin right now. The doom mongering is a little thick mind you, house building has slowed down dramatically but commercial building, civils & public infrastructure are still ticking along quite well. If your experience leans you towards these sorts of jobs then you may have a future.

Pay in recent years has become good in the construction sector especially for people with top end technical or white-collar skills (12yrs quality exp. should get you £50+K.) This won't get you 450m2 or a pool, you'll have to take a step back in this respect. The cost of living is high but if you're in the UK for a few years to fund a more plush return to SA  you may be in luck if you can deal with a more modest lifestyle in the meantime.

  2. Australia is looking for skilled workers. It might be easier to go there.

There's a lot of unemployed building workers here in the UK just now. If we really are heading into a recession things can only get worse.

  3. Hmm, the building trade is in meltdown right now in the UK because of the credit crunch - builders/construction workers being laid off left right and centre, lots of unemployment and we keep being told we're going into recession.

In order to get a work permit your employer would have to prove that

"there are no suitably qualified or experienced resident workers available"

Which might be difficult given that there are many construction workers out of work right now!  We also have free movement from the EU so you'd take second place firstly behind the UK citizens and secondly behind EU workers.

You can see all the information here:

You would obviously need to look into finding a job and getting a work permit, plus proving that you had enough funds to support yourself.  I can't say whether it will be possible or not to find a job - obviously it will depend on your specialist area but AFAIK the building trade is really not doing well in the UK right now.  As a previous poster says, you might be better off looking at Australia.  Better weather than the UK too!!!

    Good luck!

  4. Stay in africa
