Question:

How to go about learning scales?

I'm working on remembering sclaes in the most effective manner, I was told in another question I asked that I should remember the positions of the C major and minor scales accross the whole fingerboard and that from there I could get the other scales. Is this really the way to go about it?

Once I know the major and minor scales, and the modes of these scales what other scales are interesting for rock music?

  1. It's always helpful to learn scales just so that you can decipher and name your own key signatures...For starters, remember the order of the flats and sharps: BEADGCF for flats and the opposite (FCGDAEB) for sharps...to put that into English, Bb major has two flats (itself and the one after it, meaning those flats are B and E) and Db major has 5 flats because it is fourth on the list plus the one after it (G). F major has only one flat (B). For sharps, you start at G major...that has one sharp, which is F#. then the next one is D major, which has two sharps (F and C)...and so on. For scales with a lot of sharps/flats, such as Cb major (which has 6 flats), it is simpler to look at them as B major (which has 5 sharps)...for minor keys, it is 1 1/2 steps down from its major counterpart (on a keyboard). So, C major's minor key is 1 1/2 steps down (B, Bb, A) to A minor. F major's minor key is D minor (E, Eb, D).

Hope that helps at all. =/ To learn the scales, you just have to practice them to learn the fingerings inside and out.
