  1. If you can groom dogs then you're in a good position to start your own business. Start slow with some networking. Check out local rescues and offer free or discounted grooms...they will give you good word-of-mouth advertising and get you more business in the door that pays. Try buying a direct mail list of verified pet owners within a 3 to 5 mile radius of your location. Usually less than $50 and you can order postcards from vistaprint to announce your business and mail these out to everyone on the list. Should cost you less than $250 for all your marketing materials and postage, and mailing list and the return if you charge even as little as $25 per groom you only have to get 10 grooms and its paid for itself. Did this for one of my clients and she mailed out 1000 and had 235 appointments. That was a great ROI for her dog grooming business and gave her enough to step up her marketing.

Get business cards and brochures or flyers and the thing that gets them coming back is... brush the dogs teeth. Buy a jar of toothbrushes from the pet supply for ten bucks and give the owners the toothbrush when they pick up the dog so they can brush again if needed. Its a winner that gets raves and shows you really care and go that extra mile.
