  1. Usually what people do from London is take day trips to several cities in England, and StoneHenge is part of that itinerary.  I went on two separate trips, one where we went to Oxford, Stone Henge, and Bath.  Another trip I went to StoneHenge and the town of Salisbury.  A coach or bus will transport you everywhere, and it generally costs about 50 or 60 pounds.

  2. 10 to 20 pounds.

  3. Be warned that its over an hours drive, maybe 2. There are probably bus excursions or day tours you can take from London.

If you want to look at the route on a map (Google maps is good), you'd get out of London onto the M25 (the circular road round the outside) and then onto the M3 (going South-West). A little way down the M3 is a town called Basingstoke where you would change onto the A303 road which goes through the town of Amesbury (where Stonehenge is).

  4. If you don't have your own transportation you would have to travel by train or bus.  The distance from London to Stonehenge near Salisbury is about 150 km.   There are a number of day operators working out of London that offer a day trip to Stonehenge and the city of Bath.

If you want to travel by yourself you could take the train to Salisbury.  There is a bus service from Salisbury railway station. The buses run every hour on the hour from 10 am until 4pm. The journey to Stonehenge takes 33 minutes and following a huge price hike now costs £11.00 return. Return journeys from Stonehenge leave at 40 minutes past the hour starting at 10.40 am until 5.40 pm. Make sure you know the time of the last bus as it's a long walk! If there are 4 of you a taxi will almost certainly be cheaper - as well as more flexible and quicker. Agree the price with the driver before you leave the station.

  5. The cheapest way to do this will to get a National Express coach from London's Victoria Station to Salisbury.  Then once in Salisbury, at the same bus stop you are dropped off at, buy a local bus ticket to stonehenge.  The price for this trip will vary depending on what day you are traveling and how you book.  I recommend booking your coach from London ahead of time on the internet at http://www.nationalexpress.com They have special internet rates for this route that start at 1 pound each way!  The local bus to Stonehenge is just a few pounds.  I don't remember exactly how much, but it was around 2 or 3 pounds.

You could also take the train to Salisbury from London's Waterloo Station and then take the local bus to Stonehenge, but it's extremely likely the train will cost more.  Go to http://nationalrail.co.uk/ and plug in your dates and see if it is a better deal for you or not!

I would find a train/coach that departs London quite early and returns late afternoon or into the evening.  The town of Salisbury is worth a look too while you're out in the area.  Many people just use it as a stopping point to get to Stonehenge, but it has quaint shops, affordable food and a magnificent Cathedral all worth a look.  Have a great trip!  Cheers!
