  2. Most aheadsets have sealed bearings.  When a sealed bearing is shot, you throw it away and buy a new one.  

    If you actually have regular bearings in your headset, you simply need to take them out, clean the races and bearings with a solvent, dry them off, slather on fresh grease and reinstall.  If the bearings are in retainers be sure to get the orientation correct; the open side of the retainer goes toward the cone shaped race.  (If the bearings are loose, try not to drop them when you pull the steering tube from the headset.  Those buggers will roll like the very devil.  Thus, I treat every head set like it has loose bearings until I know otherwise.)
