How to grind concrete smooth?

Does anyone know how to grind concrete? I have a hump in my conccrete floor. It's not bad but is definitely a problem because I would like to lay vinyl tile over it. Does anyone know of a tool I could use to grind it smooth? It doesnt have to be pretty because I am hoping to cover it up anyway, it just needs to be relatively smooth. Thanks.

  1. You might first want to identify whether it is actuall a hump, it is possible the surrounding area is low.  You can use a chalk line and a level to identify this.  Their is a self leveling cement that is good to very thin thicknesses, this is used in alot of applications wood floors, cement floors, tile etc.  It is generally easiers to float out the hump in most cases versus grinding or chipping both of which create lots of dust.

  2. Rent a machine at home depot called either shotblaster or something like that call them

  3. they do have grinders for cement floors.  check at your local rent-a-shop/ hardware store.

  4. A pneumatic air chisel will work on a low angle.

Or get a angle grinder with a cement disk and grind

down till your happy... just remember, the dust the grinder will create, will be horrendous.

  5. If the bump is not big you can bust the concrete up with a hammer or sledge hammer, use saftey glasses,

You can also use a chipping gun to chip it away
