Is it possible? Or they are sprigs of cactus plants - they'll die eventually?

Thank you for your help!

  1. You can have beautiful hanging air-plants, and cactuses, just make sure you water infrequently.  If the containier allows, I would drill a hole in the bottom for drainage, and to allow air to the roots.  Without air, in a water saturated container they will develope root rot, and die for sure.  Check out these websites:

  2. I have a big cool cactus plant in a ceramic strawberry jar with no drainage holes and it is fine. I used small gravel at bottom and cactus soil for the plant. I do not over water it however...By the way, I love those plant hangers. C & Barrel has them and I am thinking of getting some too. On those I would use sand instead, possibly with color so you will not see the "Stained" part when they are watered.

  3. I believe that what you may be looking at are Tillandsias, or air-plants, so called because they are capable of growing without benefit of soil, just a brief dousing every couple weeks. They could sit in a container of this sort, providing no water ever is allowed to collect and create rot.

No plant will grow in stagnant conditions. Even bog plants require water movement and exchange. Without drainage, plants are doomed.

  4. At least one of those plants looks like an echeveria, which is a succulent, not a cactus. In any case, nearly all plants, cactus or not, needs drainage. Those plantings in the photo are cute, but I'm betting they won't live very long in that condition. If they do live, they won't be doing much growing in those containers. Nearly all plants in containers need some type of drainage to keep from becoming waterlogged and rotting.
