Here is what I was told to do years ago when I had a garden. Dig a hole in the ground, (of course), and dig the hole deep enough to put the tomato plant 1/2 of the way in the ground. Because, the plant will send out roots, and it has to be very firmly in the ground, because of the top weight of the plant, that will be loaded with tomatoes. Same with a planter...1/2 of the plant gets buried in dirt...however, as straight as a string, and make sure the roots are given no crushing, or cramping treatment. I never had a problem with that part of growing tomatoes because I always did it that way. Have a good day.
