How to grow grass in poor soil? ?

  1. the first thing that comes to my mind is--  late august is probably the worst time of year to try to establish most lawn species.  this needs to be done in march or april. if you want to  establishing grass from seed.

    alternative-- you can get sod.  it comes in slabs.  just lay them out there and water them.  this time of year is  OK to do it.  it is expensive.

    another alternative , if soil is very poor--  have topsoil hauled in by dumptruck.  spread it out and  seed on top if it.  very expensive, and can change the drainage slope of your yard.

    the cheap route--  in the spring,  till or plow the ground up.  add fertilizer and lime(if needed).  plant seeds and water once a week.  you can grow grass on concrete, if you give it the right amount of fertilizer and water.  


  2. You can amend the soil with compost and manure and then try planting. Or if it is too shady, give up and grow hosta and ground cover.
