  2. Steps: Put your hand in the cage for 3-5 minutes everyday until your budgie gets use to it.

Take a piece of lettuce and place it in the cage. Lettuce is a favorite treat of many birds. Once you know your bird likes it, then put it on your hand; your budgie will want to come closer.

Be patient. It may take a week or so but don't forget you shouldn't go near your bird for at least a week until it gets completely used to its new home (apart from feeding and cleaning it out).

Spend time with your budgies. After a week, you can spend as much time with your budgies. If you only have one budgie, it will have a bit of chance to talk.

Remember that the key to any animal or bird getting tamed is patience.

Tips: Speak sweetly with your bird in a soft calm voice (he or she will not understand you but will understand the tone of your voice).

Keep a close eye on what he or she is doing in the distance; soon you will discover the character of your bird and will then be able to know roughly how much time it will take to train. For example, a confident & playful budgie will take less than a week but a shy and nervous one may take more time or exactly a week.

Warnings: If your bird bites you, then don't move back no matter how sore it is because your bird is just displaying dominance over you. Don't even make any kind of hand movement, because he will know you are afraid of him and will just keep on biting you for his own enjoyment.

  3. Be careful with lettuce...NO iceburg lettuce!

  4. Budgerigars are relatively easy to tame while still young and kept singly. Taming pairs and older birds is more difficult. Patience is one of the pre-requisites for success. Some authors recommend wing-clipping before taming, although this is not always necessary with budgies.Wing-clipping just makes taming easier.

                                                             HANDLING

Soem examinations and procedures require you to hold the bird firmly. You should take it into your hand reqularly, and a healthy bird should not take offense, as long as it can breathe freely. However, the situation is different with obese birds. Obese birds not used to being handled reqularly may die of sudden heart failure due to stress.

Unlike larger parrots or cockatiels, budgerigars can nip but not bite you. Nevertheless, you may wish to put on a light glove. Do not use heavy-duty gloves because you may have problems controlling your pessure on the bird. When trying to handle a budgie, close the windows, draw the curatins, dim the lights do not switch them off. Use a fine mesh bird net to catch the bird. Try to talk to the bird in a quiet, calming voice and refrain from sudden, sharp movements.

The best way of holding a budgerigar is close to the palm of your hand over the bird's back and wings, while holding the head fimly between your thumb, index and middle fingers.

  5. well u have to wait till there about 6months old. that'll be easier. but for a start u might want to build trust with it first. put ur hand for about 30minutes then farther. continue that.
