  1. first time, pull them aside in private and explain what  you observed them doing, explain the correct and safe way of doing it, give them a written copy of range and safety rules. explain that safety for them, and for the other shooters is paramount and  that range policy ( you do have a range policy andproceduree manual right?) is that a second incident of being unsafe in a 30 day period getsthem removed from the range until they take a firearms safety course and bring proof of completion. Second incident, ask them to leave, if they refuse, do not argue, just have law enforcement escort them off the premises and serve them with a notice of trespass, which means that if they come back on the property they get arrested for trespassing.

As for you, "being promoted" to range safety officers means very little unless you have taken the training needed to be able to safely handle the range, and all things related to it. I strongly suggest that you take an NRA range officers course, or at least get the range to provide you with training and a certificate stating that you completed it, this saves you, and the range from liability in the event of an accident, or a law suit, as well as making for a safer environment in an inherently dangerous one.

Document everything in writing and keep it available.

    shoot safe

  2. I definitely understand that because you are a rookie, you don't want to come off as an an Eric Cartmen-esque authoritarian. Still, it is your job to maintain safety, and if this customer is muzzle-flashing folks then he needs to be corrected.

I have also worked as a range safety, and spent last weekend as the Range Officer (Camp Bullis in San Antonio). Doing these jobs well means having people hate you if they choose to take your corrections personally. I had two of my safeties go out onto the range when I was about to give the order to fire (this happened twice). My corrections were forceful and left each of them feeling embarrassed. It also left them alive, and smarter.

Tell him outright you have witnessed safety violations in the past, and explain what they were. Tell him that you are giving him this warning as a courtesy, and that you will be strictly enforcing safety procedures. Be sure to tell your supervisor about this, so that you are covered when you later have to remove him from the range. If he breaks even the slightest of safety rules on YOUR range, take him off. How he can regain his shooting privileges is up to you and your supervisor. If it were one of my soldiers, I'd make him teach a class on range safety, and safe handling of firearms.

  3. Your responsibility is the safety of the people this idiot puts in danger

Irresponsible gun play is immediate expulsion no discussion

You are there to enforce the rules not to be liked or even to be fair

Your word is the word of authority if you are not willing to use that authority to it's fullest extent you are not ready for the job

There is a reason I jokingly refer to you guys as range gods

    ======================================...

Your authority in no way allows you to take his gun away or take him down and break his arm

    Even gods have limitations

  4. Insist that he/she puts down their weapon or make it safe. Advise them that they are handling a firearm carelessly and let them know that they are going to be escorted out. Let them know that they are not to return ever again.

BE STERN! Let them know that you are in charge and that they have no place. If you need to have someone back you up, please do. There is no room for unsafe firearm handling at all, especially when others are around.

I had one guy at my local range load his firearm and made ready outside of his stall and it went off behind us into the shelf and wall. Oh yes I asked him to put down his gun and I made it safe. And I did not even work there.

  5. Is this person a customer or fellow employee?

If he is a customer: First, discuss the problem with higher management and report his infractions, but let them know that YOU are handling the situation.Second, the next time he comes to the range, speak to him about the problem. Maintain your professional demeanor, but remember, you are in charge of safety and you have lives to worry about.

If he is an employee, take him to the side at the beginning of your shift and remind him to be careful.  Tell him that is his verbal warning and after this, it will escalate to higher ups.

  6. if you can fire him or report him

  7. Every time I go to the range i seem to gethe spot next to some vet who thinks he knows more about guns and gun safety than the rest of us.  Plus since he served his country in "the war" the rules don't apply  to him.

typicaly after being corrected 2-3 times they remove him from the range for the day.

  8. Review the safety rules with this person and explain to them that they will be kicked out immediately if you EVER catch them point a firearm at someone again. It is amazing how many people are oblivious to the four rules of gun safety. It should be commonsense!

  9. The next time you see this person, take him aside and let him know that you know what he's doing and that it's not acceptable behavior.  Warn him that you're going to kick his *** out if you see him violate any of the range rules.  I know you don't want to get too close, but you have to put yourself in a position where you can observe what he's doing.  If he does something wrong, tell him to leave.

You cannot let things like this go.  Somebody can get shot.  I shoot an indoor range and I am always watching people around me.  I don't like it when it's crowded and what I don't like is three or four people in one lane.  I always try to get a lane close to the door in case I need to make a quick exit.

As the person in charge, you have to take charge.  People who are shooting have to do what you say, not the other way around.  You may come off as a rangemaster n**i, but so what.  At least, they're going home safe after they get done shooting.

  10. Fire him, ban him, force him to take a saftey course under some threat. If I ever did that I'd never be able to go shooting with my freinds again.

  11. take any firearm away talk to him sternly about why its dangerous to point firearms

if it happens again report him

  12. 1st thing dont be scared of him

2nd get him out of there

  13. Well if that was me i would have took him to the ground and nearly broke his arm if he pointed a weapon at me.. He needs to fully understand the course of fire and actions that you can and can't take on the range.Being the safety range officer your are responsible for what happens on the range me personally i think friendly fire is one of the worst fires to take.. you got to talk to that guy b/c him being irresponsible is a red flag for me and people who are nervous on the gun line i tend to watch them more than someone who  is doing fine Rules to follow:

1.)Treat every weapon as it was loaded

2.) Never point at anything you dont intend to shoot

3.)keep trigger finger off trigger untill ready to shoot

4.)keep weapon on safe untill ready to  fire

those 4 rules will go along way on the range ....

    congrats on being promoted

now you will see some crazy things on the range i seen people put a 9mm magazine in backwards, i seen a shotgun fly out the hands of a 5'4 female lots to come youll be fine good luck

  14. Tell him to pack his gear and get off the range.

I once saw a cop walk up to a fellow and cold c-o-c-k him and relieve him of his gun.  The cop told people watching to "When he wakes, tell the idiot he can get his gun back when he learns how to properly handle a loaded weapon.  You can also tell him that I generally shoot people who point guns at me, so he's getting off easy."

Make sure the administrators will stand up for you, and be strict, stern, and absolutely fair

    Good Luck.

    Doc

  15. sternly tell him. you need to announce your authority !

  16. Ban him or her

  17. The problem today is people are afraid to offend anybody..... When this Yo-Yo is there ask him to leave. Who cares what he thinks....... Dangerous people dont belong at a gun range... If he doesnt leave call the Sheriff... Revoke his membership and refund his membership dues..... If he is an otherwise decent guy then tell him in order to return he has to take the hunter safety course and show the certificate.... It has to get in his thick head this isnt a game.....

  18. Anyone who aims or points a gun at another at the range should be immediately kicked out!

You role there is to keep folks safe and maintain order.

    NOTE;

I want to add that Rookie or not you have to fulfill your duty. If you let anyone usurp your authority then its lost and things will get out of control.

Sternly warn him if nothing else and report him to the range manager or officer in charge.

This is where you have to step up to the plate and do your job.

  19. Get err Done, Send him Home or anywhere but there at the range ASAP.   He is a accident just waiting to happen.*

  20. kick the person out........no excuses
