Question:

How to handle constant potty accidents?

My 2 year old daughter has been potty trained for months now with no problem. All of a sudden, she keeps wetting herself once a day everyday!

It is hard not to get so mad. What is the best way to handle this and get her back on track?

  1. I'm in a similar situation, but with my 4 yr. old.  She has been daytime trained since she was 3, and we started naps and nighttime training at almost 3 1/2.  Naps have been hardest, we finally got thru a stretch with no accidents for quite awhile, and now all of a sudden she will have accidents 3 out of 5 days at the sitter's at naptime, for no reason I can come up with.  We do stickers for staying dry, I even started doing special things with her if she stayed dry for a week.  (going out for ice cream, etc.  Things I know she will like, but are different for us.)  That worked one time, probably by coincidence, cuz it hasn't happened again since.  We had a doc. visit recently, just her annual, and I didn't ask about it but the doc. asked if she was potty trained and I said yes, except for having trouble at naps and she said she'll just grow out of it.  It's hard, cuz of course you know you shouldn't get mad or punish or anything, but at times it seems my daughter is actually doing it on purpose.  (Sitter said once she didn't think she even fell asleep at naptime, and still had an 'accident.')  It's hard when they do so good for so long and then don't.  I've got no suggestions, just letting you know you're not the only one.  Everyone I talk to has no idea what's going on either, or what to do about it.

  2. I would start all over. Ask her once an hour if she needs to go to the bathroom. If she says no more than once, go ahead and take her anyway. Sit her on the potty and instead of starring, sing some songs. This might help take the "pressure" off. Once she has gone sing praises and maybe try a treat. Make it fun for her to go, tell her how happy it makes you. Keep with it, never lose your temper and soon she should be right back on track. The more positive you are, the more she will want to do it. Also, try to stay away from pull ups. I know they are easier, but this gives her the idea that it's ok. If she wets herself in big girl panties, it will run down her legs. I guarantee she wont like it. Good luck!

  3. Obviously she was not fully potty trained.  I suggest to start putting her back on the toilet every hour or so, and until she is fully potty trained keep a diaper on her rather than putting her in underpants.
