Question:

How to handle this problem?

There are signs in every compartment of the train/commuter/bus to remind the public to keep those seats for those needy, but no one bothers. In fact, I believe there are numerous cases where seniors had to get packed in the train/commuter/bus as no one bothers to give them a seat. Few times I got cold stare from other train/commuter/bus when I ask for a seat for the needy. Most stared at me like a freak or I am some kind of busybody which makes me uneasy and makes me think whether I am right to butt into others' businesses.

so..what do you think?

  1. It's very commendable of you to consider other peoples needs. Few people in this cruel world even take the time when they aren't thinking of themselves! Unfortunately, there is probably nothing you can do. Sounds like you live in a big city, which only magnifies the problem. Good luck, and just keep trying!

  2. First - thanks for your intervention...On a bus, the driver should make sure that handicapped travelers are accommodated...The train does not have attendants in each car, so each of us should make sure that those in need of seating have priority.

    You done good...Much obliged.

  3. There's similar situations in mass transit in NYC.

On the city bus, even on crowded bus, elderly gets on, however no one give up their seat. Not even the tourist.

On the bus, trolley, you ask driver to ask if someone can give up your seat for disable/senior.

On the subway, nobody does not give up. My former roommate and friend who was on crunches before and no one did not give up seat for him on subway.

On the subway, you could ask someone kindly can someone give up your seat, please? I'm senior citizen/disable.

  4. You can only ask and do your part and as for the other people, well there is not much that you can really do, people are just rude.
