He is in 4th grade and has trouble remembering what he just read in the book. So i try to help him go back and look for the answers in the book but he is not getting it. He wants me to do all the work. He will also just put random answers in the blanks. EX: He read a book George Washington and said he had no children but had 6 boys. Then it asked "if ur person was famous for a sport, what sport? and he wasn;t suppose to answer that question i told him not to, but he but Micheal Jordan was famous for basketball. I'm worried that when he gets into High school or even Junior High that he will fail test or quizzes they have over a book they read in class. does anyone have any suggestions on how to teach him how to look for the answers?

  1. Look in the back of the book for a index of words that should list the page number that they pertain to.

    Such as George Washington.....page 222.

  2. is he taking meds for one? my brother has had ADHD since like, the 3rd grade. i would suggest read the questions first, thats a good studying trick so he'll know what to look for when he  reads. good luck! =)

  3. Try using a different color highlighter marker on important information in the book. Then make up your own quiz.If the answer to your question number one is highlighted in yellow, put a yellow circle around the number one,so he can match the colors,   at first, and feel successful. After a time, stop circling the question number.

If you can't use a marker in the book, write important parts of the story on  different slips of paper. If question one is" how many children did George Washington have", give him two or three pieces of paper with information(not too many or it may be overwhelming)such as,one slip saying "9" and another slip saying"Michael Jordan",let him choose the correct answer and glue stick it next to the question.

These are a couple of things I did with my son.He did not have ADHD but did have reading comprehension problems, and it did seem to help.Good luck!

  4. ADHD, including ADHD Inattentive, is a neurological challenge like epilepsy (petit mal, absence, complex partial, etc.) is.  The single classification of medicines most closely associated with the temporary reduction of ADHD symptoms is the central nervous system stimulants - alerting agents.  Coffee - caffeine compounds - is the weakest;  stronger meds include Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, etc.  Good luck.
