How to help the mess of a litter box?

I have two cats, both are put up during the day so they don't use the litter box all day. How can I help the tracking of little pieces of litter from getting all over my kitchen?

  1. They sell mats to put under the litter box that will trap any litter that falls out.  All you have to do is wipe off the mat everyday.  I got one at WalMart.


  2. maybe a piece of rough cloth around the box would keep the litter off the floor?
