Question:

How to hem a T shirt without it curling up at the bottom?

I'm doing it by hand (I'm getting a surger when I can afford one). The best I can come up with is using iron-on hem tape, but I haven't tried it yet. Any suggestions?

  1. The first thing you want to do is press the hem in place (not using the tape.)   I would recommend at least 1/2"-1"  if you are trying to avoid a rolled look.  If you're doing this by hand, then you need to get your needle and thread and start whip-stitching the raw edge into place.  You should be able to lightly catch the underside of the shirt, then no stitching will show on the outside.  Take care to not stitch too tight, the looser the better, but enough to hold it, plus you need to remember that a t-shirt stretches, so test it as you sew.

  2. Just iron it after make your crease.  Iron on hem tape sounds good.
