Question:

How to hook a fish when fishing?

Whenever I go fishing, the fish either doesn't get hooked or it spits it out. When I use my friend's fishing rod, it works fine. What could be wrong?

  1. First check the stiffness of the rod...he, he I said stiff rod...lol...I usually use at least a Medium Action Rod...when you get the bite reel down all the slack, then set the hook as if you were going to hit yourself between the eyes with the rod...make sure you use sharp hooks and you have good line...I like to say when I set the hook, I cross their eyes...but hook set also depends on what type of lure or rig you are using...for a Carolina Rig you want to sweep the rod, not go straight back...hope this helps...

  2. so vague yet still so answerable

Rip its face off when you set the hook if it still comes unbuttoned the rod tip is too old and flimsy. you have to stretch the lines and make the hook dig into the mouth past the jaw bone in order to set the hook, that is how its done. some fish have harder jaws than others and then you need to really get into it. I would think too if they are on and then they get off after a little bit of a fight you are dropping the rod tip and giving slack to the line. all fish have tongues and they will use it to pry out the hook and spit it, and they do it very easily if you allow the line to go slack for even a half second. always keep your tip up, rod bent and the expression comes from tight lines because without them you go hungry....

  3. maybe deep inside u want a new rod?its ok,don't feel wrong about it cos myself got many rods.if that's not all maybe its your technique is very wrong or blunt.reaction time of fish strike over your angle multiply your rod length is your real reaction time to set your hook at its mouth so as for u to later release it if u choose to has a higher survival rate.again its the tension that we seek in any strike, depending on the line n weight/sinker/shot over any condition at that place we fish at that moment,we should know how big is that fish when it started testing our bait Cos of its behavior/the way some species take some type of bait/lure at which habitat/location/dusk/dawn/moon phases/tides.also from which direction its coming, left or right over the direction of in/out going tide/current even in a lake/river/pond there still is some form of water movement below.knowledge is your key to know what is coming your way n also be alert but silent.big trophy fish is very smart n wary, they usually sample its bait lightly so u must wait for its strike.its like tap tap ....tap.........bang your drag is on fire so set your drag first before your hook.small species u should use shorter reaction time rod n fast reel, medium size fish species, longer reaction time n medium speed, big dog should use a ultra fast rod n an ultra fast reel that is very strong.

    Good luck.

  5. if you are using bait then check to see if the tip of the pole or line at the top is moving if it gets yanked and then dosen't do it again but your pull is still moving you have a bite yank it good enough to hook it but not to take it right out of there mouth.

  6. What you need to do is make sure the rod is stiff, yet flexible. A loose rod won't have the whipping effect needed to embed the hook. As for making sure that you are setting at the right time, the "3 second rule" usually works. That's when you let the fish play for three seconds before setting. This can backfire though. Sometimes the fish hits and lets go, so if the hit is really hard, go ahead and set it. If you are trolling, release the bail for five seconds, letting the line run out, close and set. Hard. Also, your rod length can have a huge effect. A shorter rod needs more whip to set the hook, while a longer rod does not, since the end moves farther for each increment it moves at the point where you are holding it.

    Hope this helps.

  7. really need to know what hooks and fish you are using.. if you are using live bait and dead lining go to a circle hook..if bass fishing do like the first guy said set the hook hard and use a rod with a stiif action..
