I want to hook up my new DVD Recorder and my VCR to my TV so that I can play my VHS home movies and record them onto DVD's.

What is the proper way to hook all this up so that I can still tape my TV shows.

  1. There are many ways to do this, and the answer really depends on the equipment you have and the inputs and outputs available.

The simple, but maybe not best quality way:

I assume you have a TV that has A/V inputs (labelled Audio L-R and Video).  If you don't, this gets a little trickier.

Run your cable/antenna to the VCR's antenna input.

Run your VCR's antenna output to your TV's antenna input.

Run cables to connect the audio L/R and Video outputs on your VCR to the corresponding INPUTS on the DVD Recorder.

Run another set of cables to connect your DVD recorder's A/V OUTPUTS to the corresponding INPUTS on your TV.

To watch TV and/or record on VCR, set up the VCR for recording and turn it off (same as normal)

To watch a tape on the VCR, set the TV to watch the VCR's channel (3 or 4) and play the tape.

To copy a tape to a DVD, set up the TV as above, put the tape in the VCR, set the DVD recorder to watch the A/V inputs, press RECORD on the DVD and PLAY on the VCR.

To watch a DVD, set the TV to watch the A/V inputs.
