Question:

How to hook up a flywheel to a 95 Ford Ranger XLT

I have a 95 Ford Ranger XLT and I paid someone to install a new transmission, however they didn't hook up the flywheel. That's what I was told anyway. What happens is that when I try to start it there is a loud metal clanging noise and it won't switch gears. Any clue where I can find instructions on how to hook this up myself?

  1. Fly wheels bolt to the crankshaft between engine and transmission. If that's the case take it back to trannie shop.

  2. Well...a flywheel is used on a manual transmission vehicle and it has the clutch bolted to it. That entire assembly sits between the engine and transmission. If they didn't bolt the flywheel to the crankshaft, the only way to do this is to remove the transmission again. I highly doubt this is the case.

I am inclined to think we are talking about an automatic transmission. There is a relatively light flexplate bolted to the motor that is then bolted to the torque convertor. Hopefully the flexplate or torque convertor haven't been damaged when you started it up. There should be an access cover on the bottom of the bell housing which will allow you access to bolt these components together.

It's pretty poor craftsmanship to miss that step when they reassembled the vehicle. I would be taking it to someone knowledgeable to make sure the rest of the job was done properly!   Good Luck!
