Recently I got normal cable with a cable box. I have surround audio system, but I'm not sure how to set it up now. The audio out used to go to amplifier video in I think. I used to set input as video and it used to work fine.

  1. Digital coaxial cables are strong and carry a good signal.  Run one of these or a toslink from the box to receiver or just use decent 2-pronged analog audio cables (get a decent set with gold plated connectors and some shielding/braiding). These are not expensive $10-$20 for any of these if you shop around.

  2. It doesn't really matter what input you use, except phono, just use the audio output from your cable box to an audio input on your receiver , set the mode to that input at everything should work fine.
