How to i get my IM history for court?

If i had to get my yahoo messenger IM information would i contact yahoo and have them send it to me directly? Like my instant message history or would i need a lawyor to supiona the records for me. i need them for a court case against my sons father, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

as far as i know i think you have to save it. that is how we did it at our department.
